Brianna's Capstone

About Me

My name is Brianna Ramkishun and I am a senior at Sport and Medical Sciences Academy. I have been attending SMSA since ninth grade. I was born and raised in Hartford Connecticut. I value my family, health, and education. I used to be a student who did the bare minimum in school, but by  fifth grade I started to find it difficult to understand what I was being taught in math. I tried very hard to understand and excel but the difficulties of failing math and passing english made it overwhelming for me to keep trying, as I still failed when I kept at it. As a result I had to go to summer school and afterschool tutoring to help, but even after all that I wasn't able to show any progress. I tried to always practice and ask questions as well as use various tools and tactics to help me focus and retain information better, it was somewhat effective. Eventually when I started seventh grade, I was able to improve. From the way my teacher taught, using colors and activities that stimulated my mind, made me grasp math better. I was able to improve throughout the year because of her. Due to the way she was able to teach me and have me be able to retain math concepts I used it to help other students. In high school, SMSA offers a tutoring program, which I decided to join as a tutor. I felt that if I were able to improve in math, I could help other students who felt the same way I did back then in middle school. I mainly tutored in math as a way for me to understand and remember what the student is being taught to aid them in a way that they could understand. I found this as a driving force to reinforce my education and give support to my fellow peers. Since I decided to help other students with their difficulties in school, I decided to help other students, specifically those with special needs in trying to understand and retain information as my capstone project. I feel as if there is a barrier in your path, you can be able to overcome, especially with the power of an education behind you.
